قتل qatala u (qatl) to kill, slay, murder, assassinate (ه s.o.); to mitigate, alleviate (هـ s.th., e.g., البرد al-barda the cold, الجوع al-jū‘a the hunger); to mix, dilute (ب هـ s.th. with, e.g., wine with water); to know, master (هـ s.th., e.g., a skill) │ قتله خبرا (علما) (kubran, ‘ilman) or قتله درسا وبحثا (darsan wa-baḥtan) to know or master s.th. (e.g., a skill, a field of study) thoroughly; قتل الموضوع بحثا (baḥtan) to study a topic most thoroughly, treat a subject exhaustively; قتل الدهر خبرة (dahra kibratan) to have long experience with life, be worldly wise <b>II</b> to kill, massacre (هم people), cause carnage (هم among people) <b>III</b> to combat, battle (ه s.o.), fight (ه s.o., with s.o., or against s.o.) │ قاتله الله lit.: may God fight him! i.e., 742 approx.: damned bastard! <b>VI</b> and <b>VIII</b> to fight with one another, combat each other <b>X</b> to risk one’s life, defy death
